Let's talk product. The most important part of your system is the inverter. Basically, the panels produce DC power and we need to convert this to AC power, which is what your house utilizes. Historically, there are two types of inverters, string inverters and microinverters. First, string inverters. They are a DC coupled system. This is a traditional setup where you have one or multiple inverters on the ground which connect to a series of panels. A great way to think of this is like old fashioned Christmas lights. If one of the panels goes out, the whole string stops working. Similarly, if one panel is shaded or underperforming, it can affect the entire string of those panels, reducing overall energy output. Secondly, a microinverter. This is an AC coupled system. In contrast, each panel in the system has its own small microinverter attached right on the roof. This allows each panel to work independently, so if one panel is shaded or malfunctioning, the others still perform at their full potential. However, microinverters have a few downsides. Microinverters have higher fail rates, particularly in extreme weather like here in Saskatchewan. They also have some power loss issues. If a microinverter is rated for 400 watts of output, but attached to a 500 watt panel, it can't convert all the power the panel generates, leaving some of that potential energy unutilized. Additionally, because microinverters convert power to AC right on the roof, it's inefficient to add DC power batteries or EV chargers if that power has already been converted to AC power. To store or use energy that power needs converted back to DC power and then back to AC to utilize, which is quite inefficient and brings lots of power loss.
