Installing your own solar panels can save you thousands of dollars and provide deep satisfaction in powering your home with your own hands. But it's not for everyone. Here's how to know if DIY is the right choice:

System Planning

Proper planning is the foundation of a successful DIY solar project. Here's how to size and design your system:

Step 1: Analyze Your Electricity Usage

Gather your last 12 months of electricity bills. Note your annual kWh usage. Most homes use 8,000-15,000 kWh per year.

Step 2: Calculate System Size

In most Canadian locations, plan for approximately 1,100-1,300 kWh production per kW of solar annually. Use this formula:

System Size (kW) = Annual Usage (kWh) ÷ 1,200

Example: 12,000 kWh annual usage ÷ 1,200 = 10 kW system

Step 3: Assess Your Roof

  • Orientation: South-facing is ideal; east/west work with 10-15% less production
  • Pitch: 20-40° is optimal; flat roofs need tilt mounts
  • Shading: Avoid areas shaded by trees, chimneys, or other buildings
  • Condition: Roof should have 15+ years of life remaining
  • Space: Each panel needs ~20 sq ft; plan for ~200 sq ft per 1 kW

Equipment You Need

Solar System Components

  • Solar Panels: We recommend monocrystalline panels, 400-450W each
  • Inverter: String inverter or microinverters (included in our kits)
  • Racking System: Rail-based or rail-less mounting system
  • Wiring: PV wire, connectors, conduit
  • Disconnect: AC disconnect switch near meter
  • Monitoring: WiFi monitoring system (often included with inverter)

Safety First

Roof work and electrical systems are dangerous. Never work alone. Use proper fall protection. Never work on wet roofs. If you're uncomfortable at any point, stop and call for professional help.

Step-by-Step Installation

Day 1: Roof Preparation & Layout

  1. Safety setup: Install roof anchors, set up harness system, position ladder securely
  2. Mark rafter locations: Using a stud finder from inside (attic) or outside, mark all rafter positions with chalk
  3. Plan array layout: Mark where each rail will run, ensuring alignment with rafters
  4. Install flashing: Pre-drill pilot holes, install L-feet or flashed mounts at marked locations

Day 1-2: Rail Installation

  1. Attach rails to mounts: Slide rails into mounting brackets, leave loose for adjustment
  2. Level and align: Use string line or laser to ensure rails are level and parallel
  3. Torque bolts: Once aligned, torque all connections to manufacturer specs
  4. Install wire clips: Add cable management clips along rails

Day 2-3: Panel Installation

  1. Position panels: Carry panels to roof one at a time (panels are heavy - 50+ lbs)
  2. Attach mid and end clamps: Slide panels into position, secure with clamps
  3. Connect wiring: Connect panel MC4 connectors to form strings
  4. Route cables: Run cables through clips, down to inverter location
  5. Install conduit: Protect cables running down roof/wall in conduit

Panel Handling Tips

  • Never carry more than one panel at a time on the roof
  • Keep panels face-down when not installing to prevent activation
  • Use a rope system to lift panels rather than carrying up ladder
  • Work from the top of the array down

Electrical Connection

This section describes what your electrician will do. While you shouldn't perform this work yourself, understanding the process helps you communicate effectively with your electrician.

Inverter Installation

  • Mount inverter in designated location (garage, basement, or exterior)
  • Connect DC input from solar array
  • Connect AC output to dedicated breaker
  • Ground system properly

Disconnect & Meter

  • Install AC disconnect near utility meter
  • Coordinate with utility for meter upgrade/replacement
  • Label all disconnects per code requirements

Inspection

Your electrician will schedule the electrical inspection. The inspector will verify:

  • Proper wire sizing and connections
  • Grounding compliance
  • Disconnect functionality
  • Labeling and documentation

Testing & Commissioning

Pre-Connection Checks

  1. Visual inspection: Check all connections, ensure no damaged wires
  2. Voltage test: Use multimeter to verify string voltage matches expected value
  3. Polarity check: Confirm positive and negative are correctly connected

System Startup

  1. Turn on DC disconnect
  2. Turn on AC disconnect
  3. Inverter should initialize and connect to grid
  4. Verify production on monitoring app

Monitoring Setup

Connect your monitoring system to WiFi. Most inverters have apps that show:

  • Real-time production
  • Daily/monthly/yearly energy totals
  • System health alerts
  • Panel-level performance (with microinverters)
